yj won\'t start, help!!!!!

We just changed the engine in my friends yj. We threw in another 4.2l. After installing it, putting all the wiring back the way they came, the vehicle didn't start! We tried sourcing the problem, but found nothing. It has spark, it has ignition, and it has gas but it still won't fire up. Can anyone help us?

Thanks for any help,
Chris

Can I assume that you indexed the distributor to the engine???

She does cough and sputter but nothing else. We thought it might have been not getting gas, but she started to flood. We tried quick start but nothing but sputter, sputter, cough, sputter.

Re: yj won\'t start, help!!!!!

Should be simple ..pull #1 plug .. ...(better pull the pos+ lead to the coil temporarily) ..place thumb over spark plug hole ...rotate engine to #1 (your thumb will be pushed off the hole) ..rotate the engine by hand so that the timing mark is @ TDC ....pull the distributor cap and see where the rotor is pointing. That is #1 plug. If you want another post to be number one ..lift the distributor and rotate the rotor until you get it so that when it's seated the rotor is pointing to the post that you desire. Now follow the firing order around the distributor (153624 ..last I heard ALL inline sixes have this firing order)..close cap ..reattach coil primary lead ..reinstall #1 plug .

Start engine ..set timing.

or ...have you already done this?

We tried setting timing, we even swapped distributors. Still nothing. Are we missing something?

Re: yj won\'t start, help!!!!!

this may be a stupid suggestion, but when you said flooding, I couldn't help but to remember when I had a "professional" idiot rebuild my carb and he damaged the float... which in turn, caused my carb to keep gas incoming with nowhere to go but everyplace it could. Anyway... I replaced the float and it started right up....I crap you not.

Also sounds like it could be a vac leak. There could be a problem with the choke. I had the same problem two weeks ago getting a 360 started. Found a crack in the vac hose, fixed it, and it fired up on the first key turn.
