2.5 \"Clacking\" under load

My 92 Yj with a 2.5 has started just recently (at least I just started to notice it) to "Clack" a little from what I think are the lifters when it is under torque. It happens at different RPM's and speeds depending if I am going up a hill or not. If I am cruising on the hiway it won't do it unless I give it full throttle. I recently had the oil changed so I double checked the level, Oil pressure is around 40 psi and everything else looks good. Any Ideas???

I would check the timing. Sounds like it's pinging under load, and if it is left too long can do some damage to the engine.

Sounds like rod knock. It could be pinging, but a clacking noise is usually internal.

If that's a GM 2.5 than it may be gear lash in the timing gears. I have an S10 Chev with this engine. At about 100k miles it started to clack under a light load than it started to click at idle. Now at 175k it sounds like it is falling apart at idle but runs well in every other way. The cam gear is pressed on the cam so pulling the cam is the only way to fix afaik.

It's not a GM -- it's the AMC 2.5. Basically a 4.0L with 2 cyls lopped off.

Lifter tick is common to the engines. If it's loud, you might want to pull it apart. How many miles you got? If it's over 200, might be worth a rebuild or change. My 2.5 made it 365K before needing the rebuild. I had finally spun a main, but she did have a good rattle to her. Nothing too loud on any cylinder, but a generally a constant 4 cylinders ticking noise.
