Difference btween CJ-5, CJ-7 and Wrangler

I am looking at a CJ/Wrangler purchase. What is the difference between a CJ-5 and a CJ-7? Is one a longer wheelbase than the other? How do they compare (especially wheelbase) to the Wrangler?

I have located a 1990 Wrangler (very palin model...Base Model?) with 75,000 miles. It has a 6 cylinder engine and a 5-speed; no A/C and no frills. It's extremely clean and well maintained for $7,500. The "book" on it with Edmunds is just over $4,000, so a price tag of $7,500 struck me as high until I started looking around and realized there are very few available in that price range or age. Does this seem like a decent deal on a stock, plain, well-maintained 1990? Is the newer fuel-injected model enough better to justify passing on this 1990 model? I'm at 7,000 feet and will use it at altitudes up to 10,000 feet so the 4-cylinder seems to me to be a poor choice. I really know very little about Jeeps but I know a fair amount about engines. Any help or additional comments are most welcome. Thanks all.

Dave

I don't know where you're located (hint: fill in your profile) but around my way, a jeep like that goes for around $3000-$4000 tops. Low mileage is nice (if it is in fact correct) but it doesn't make up for lack of fuel injection in my book. There are '97 TJ's with 4 cyl and same mileage going for $7500 around here.

Now I have another question...what V.I.N. character tells me if it's a TJ or a YJ tub?

The TJ and YJ are radically different across the board - Aside from the obvious differences (round vs square lights, huge plastic dash w/ SRS in the TJ, No grille mounted markers on the TJ, coil vs. leaf suspension, fuel filler location, etc) The TJ just looks different from any other Jeep. Where the YJ was really just an "updated" CJ7 tub, the TJ was a total redesign.

Pugsly, you don't list where you live in your profile either.

Can you tell I'm getting a crash course which generates new questions? OK, is the Wrangler the same length as the CJ-7? If so, that means the CJ-5 whellbase is not currently available. What I want is something a hair longer for cargo like cooler, sleeping bags, tent, etc.

Yes, the CJ5 is shorter, and has different shaped doors.

If you are not interesed in bringing a lot of people with you, get a CJ-7, YJ and take the back seat out. You whould not believe the amount of stuff you can fit in the back of your jeep without a seat. But then again, I never go anywhwere with more than one other person... So I don't really miss the seat.
