Rolled the Jeep and now it backfires?!?!?!

I rolled my Jeep about a week ago and now I can't get it to run right. It now backfires a little through the carb and exhaust at higher RPM's. Why? I noticed a few hairline cracks in the top of my coil. What would cause the cracks and could this cause the engine to miss at higher RPM's? Please help, I have a competition this weekend and I have to figure it out by Friday night. Thanks, Casey
P.S. The motor is a stock 304 out of 78 CJ-7 with a Motorcraft 2100 carb. I have very few vacuum lines on it.

Hmmm...this one is weird. My first impression was that some crud from the oil pad got into the cylinders during the roll. However, since the coil has cracks in it, it could simply be that the coil is damaged from the roll, and it's breaking up the spark. Replace the coil and see what happens.

Perhaps the roll caused the set on the distributer to move.

Heck, after I rolled my 304, it ran better.

Hey Casey, what competition are you going to be in? Mudbog? If not, where is it?

Maybe I should roll it again and see if that works!

It's just the mud bog. I don't care for the mud too much, but I feel like I have a decent chance of winning some cash. So I'm gonna give it hell and see what happens. That is if I can get the tired 304 to run right.

A FEW hairline cracks in the distributor? When you replace it check to see if they are cracks or carbon traces. Check your engine ground.

Taz,
what are carbon traces and how does that relate to the engine ground, or does it?
Thanks

Re: Rolled the Jeep and now it backfires?!?!?!

Carbon traces are burn lines caused when the spark can't take it's normal path to ground through the plug. When the coil gets charged, it's going to try to dissipate that charge somewhere. It'll go to the coil mount, the coil primary connections, down the side of the distributor, anywhere it can get to ground to dissipate the charge.

A loose engine ground is one of the things that causes the problem, bad secondary wires, spark plug or coil wire are others. Start it up in total darkness and see if you see little lightning strikes around the coil and/or distributor especially.

You have to roll the Jeep in the OTHER direction. If you do it the same way you will double the problem
