Body swap question..

Could someone please explain to me, which part of the vehicle would hold precedence when registering. Does the body tub or the frame. What Id like to do, is swap out the tub on my 95 Wrangler, and put in a tub from an early CJ-7. But when it comes time to register, do I register it as a Wrangler, or a CJ? Smog testing isnt a great concern, because its not done here in Kansas.
Thanks
Tim

Re: Body swap question..

Why on earth would you want to swap your galvanized YJ tub for a rusty CJ tub? Unless that is your tub is totalled and the CJ tub is cheap.

Re: Body swap question..

1.Better looks
2.Why not do something different
3.Cheeper registration and taxes
4.If I ever do move to an area that does smog testing, it's a lot easier to explain why there's a '78 chevy 350 in a 76 CJ, than a '95 Wrangler.
5. It's all just sheet metal anyway.

Re: Body swap question..

The way I understand it it that the body is what the vin number stays with. This is where the plates are with the '85 CJ-7 I had, on the grill shell next to rad, and on fire wall by the master cylinder and on a plate sandwiched between the wiper motor and dash. I'd think that according to most local government if it was registered as a duck then it will pay taxes as a duck, as long as the vin number says what year the duck was born, reguardless whether it looks, acts, and smells like a duck. I think there would be no problem in registering it as the wrangler model with the CJ body as long as the vin plates are transferred to the CJ body. Now if you want to register it as a CJ with a Wrangler vin, I don't think that will work. If you have a title with a CJ vin number you're good to go.
