Newbie with a couple of dumb questions

After swearing off Jeep addiction (twice now), I have again brought one into the fold. This time it is a 75 CJ5, with the intention of keeping it mostly original, with only a minimum of modifications (I am sure this plan will change with time) - my questions are as follows: Where, if at all, can I get a repro of the original dash information decal? And on a more serious note, does anyone still make a swingaway spare carrier for less than $300?

Any info y'all can give me would be great

Re: Newbie with a couple of dumb questions

1. Try Kaiser Willys here

2. I didn't find any for under $300 I liked, so I built my own....my father is a heavy equipment mechanic, and I think like him, so mine is overkill, but hey, out of pocket was under $100! If you would like some pics, let me know. Mine is on a '74 CJ5.

Re: Newbie with a couple of dumb questions

Thanks a million - pics would be great. I was pretty sure I'd end up having to fab one, but didn't have any clue where to start.

Re: Newbie with a couple of dumb questions

Here is a pic where you can see most of the apparatus....it's 2x4 square tubing for both the bumper and the swing arm. The upright for the tire is 2x2. Pivot pins are 1" diameter. I relocated my tail lights to the bumper, and added a 2" reciever hitch as well. The spare I'm running is actually a 33" fullsize spare--this was for the time being when I took the pics. Just tonight added a spare tire carrier.....also, these are old pics....the jeep is rust free and painted these days.

Re: Newbie with a couple of dumb questions

Another pic, this from another angle. The carrier will swing either way. Just depends which pin you pull. Also built a different license plate holder....and "upgraded" to a Willy's tailgate!

Re: Newbie with a couple of dumb questions

Here is a close up of the end of the swing out section. 3/8" T-1...definitely overkill, but hey, it was laying around...*grin* Welded washers top and bottom for extra bearing surface and to raise the pins off the carrier itself. I'll try to get a pic of the carrier with gascan mounting on it tommorow with the digital camera and post it too.

Re: Newbie with a couple of dumb questions

Pilfer away! Only one thing....you gotta post some pics when you are done! *grin* Again, my set up is WAY overbuilt for what I really need....but that's just the way I like things. It IS kinda heavy, but I have add-a-leafs front and rear, and a V-8, so it isn't a problem. Seriously, post some pics when you get it put together!

Have fun with it!
