Trans grinding, \'94 YJ, swap/replace/rebuild?

Okay all, I know this has been discussed and I am searching for info right now on but... my Dad's '94 Wrangler's transmission is starting to go. Grinds going into 3rd and occasionally into 2nd. It's a base model w/4 cylinder. I told him to drain and refill it w/full synthetc ATF and that might get him through for a while, but I know he'll need to replace or rebuild it eventually. My questions are, what tranny does he most likely have now? Is there another more durable direct replacement transmission? Should he have it rebuilt or can he get a reman'd unit from AutoZone or the like? He will most likely not do any of this himself and I live too far away to do it for him so he needs the least expensive option but if I can get him to upgrade the tranny for close to the same $$ he'll be better off. This is his daily driver and he tows a trailer about once month to haul feed. Thanks for the help.
