Dana 300 Problems

All of a sudden I have a puddle of gear oil under my CJ. It appears that it is leaking from where the front drive shaft goes into the Dana 300. Is this a common problem? What should I do?

Re: Dana 300 Problems

sounds like a seal no big deal but it would be a good time to give it a complete overhaul or at the very least check all the bearings and replace all the seals and gaskets

How hard is it to rebuild one of these? I have never done anything like this before. Where do I buy the parts?

Re: Dana 300 Problems

I would not recomend rebiulding the entire t/c, just take the t/c off, and replace the input shaft seal and do a fluid change while you are at it. It is really a very simple job, no special tools required, I think I used a 2" schd 40 piece of pipe to install the new seal, to ensure it went on straight.

YOu're talking a 15 year old t-case, if you have the time I too recommend pulling it and going over it. While you're at it, give it a Tera Low 4:1! For an idea of what you are in for (gear driven t-case easy) I have the Dana 300 pages of the Chiltons manual on line at http://home.off-road.com/~rockgarden/D300/

Re: Dana 300 Problems

Why rebuild the whole thing? Is it malfunctioning? A little oil is no cause for a rebuild, and it can be done very easily. I'd just replace the seals and be done with it.
