talking about feeling like an a$$

When did they take the cap and rotors out of the Jeeps????

Went to Pep Boys to get tune-up parts, they looked at me like I was nuts, I said, "what do you mean you don't carry tune up parts for a 2000????

Got home, opened the hood, said holy _ _ _ _! It was pretty easy to change the plugs though, I guess I had the CJ for too many years.

Re: talking about feeling like an a$$

I had that same experience the day after I got home with my 2002 TJ. I decided to "get to know" my new Jeep and popped the hood. Everything looke great, it was the first engine I've ever owned that wasn't brown all over.

Something kept bugging me though. I figured that it was the six as I have always had a V8 in the CJ. After a few minutes, I realized that there wasn't a dist!. I actually found two things that I don't like, the new iginition system (which means higher replacement costs) and the fan nut on the water pump. That's the same kind of nut that drove me crazy on my BMW! BTW, if anybody wants an old BMW, let me know....it runs, its just ugly.

Re: talking about feeling like an a$$

Ok, repeat after me (using a thick Mexican accent): "Rotors? Distributors? We ain't got no stinkin' rotors! We don't need no stinkin' Distributors!"

1. Things change.
2. People don't like it when things change.
3. Automotive systems are designed by some pretty smart engineers.
4. Those engineers rarely have to maintain that which they design.
5. The systems are becoming smarter and more sophisticated.
6. The average shadetree mechanic has a rough time keeping up.
6. It's requiring more and more expensive tools to maintain a late model car.
7. It's requiring more and more expensive manuals and books to maintain said car.
8. Don't give up... it only seem's like a loosing proposition.
9. By the time the Jeep's got 100K miles on it.. you'll either:
a. Know the systems.
b. Or be so broke from haveing it fixed by others that you'll be glad it's paid for.
10. Ain't life Grand!

I kinda like it. No distributor, rotor, plug wires to worry about. If anything should fail on it, just unplug it, pop it off, snap on the new strip and go. Not having to worry about firing order is a plus to. It confused me too the first time I looked around in there, but I think it's a good system.

When did they change? Our '97 TJ has the "normal" setup.

what is it now?
Just so you don't feel stupid, I'm about to drive to a dealer and pop the hood to take a look.

Re: talking about feeling like an a$$

My '99 Suburban has a 100,000 warranty on the plugs, wires, and even the engine coolant. Are you sure that your 2000 is ready for a tune-up? As Leve said, the engineers have worked hard on these newer engines.

Re: talking about feeling like an a$$

I wouldn't put 100,000 miles on the plugs if you paid me. I also wouldn't want the hassle of having to drop my vehicle off for service, I'd rather spend the $15 and change them myself. How do they warranty out the wires? Only if there is no spark? I change my plugs at least once a year - 2000 miles or so. I don't have to, but I figure it's cheap insurance.

Re: talking about feeling like an a$$

The statement was made about a vehicle that is all computer controled. I am no where close to this amount of mileage and have never had a lick one problem with the vehicle at all. So, how they warrant stuff out, I do not know, I'm stating from my owners manual. On my Jeep I change certain parts on a regular bases also.
