What kind of oil in NP231 transfer.

My Haynes manual says i should use Mercon/Dexron II in the TC. But the oil that i drained from the TC now looks like plain engine oil? It`s correct that i should use AT oil in the transfercase, right?

Yes. ATF is the required fluid for that transfer case.

yep. Go with the factory recommendation.

Don't use motor oil. It is not formulated for transmissions. ATF has anti-shear compounds that motor oil does not have.

Best regards

Did the oil you drain smell like plain engine oil? It's likely someone put some 75w-90 in there. I'll be the third to say it....ATF is the right stuff.

Throw some cheap stuff in there and run it for a hundred miles or so, then drain and refill with something decent.
