newbie question...bueller...anyone?

Hello All!
i am new to this forum and had a few questions...

i am just about to close on a deal for a '97 TJ Sport with 60K miles...any big negatives, about this year i should know about before buying?

what exactly are bead-lock wheels? what are some decent quality brands that manufacture these wheels and simulated types? is the "rock crawler" brand any good?

i am looking to get that style of wheel. thanks in advance!

Re: newbie question...

Well I'll be the first to admit that I don't know much about the newer jeeps, but I do know what the bead lock does. Basically it holds your tires onto the rim with a "lock" so that if you run over or near a rock that pushes in on the tire real hard, it won't pop the bead and let all the air out of your tire. That's the best I can explain it anyway. I'm sure you'll get some better answers from others on here.

Beadlocks are a ring of steel that bolts to the rim and sandwiches the tires bead between it and the rim "locking" the tire to the rim. They are great, but as far as I know not street-legal. There are a number of simulation beadlocks that are legal and are just rims with fake bolts on the edge. Hope this helps...

Re: newbie question...bueller...anyone?

I'm not sure why anyone would want to run fake beadlocks but to each his own I guess. The 97 was the first year for the TJ and it did have a few problems. I believe there was a factory recall on a cracked manifold and the jeep leaked water in when raining. Maybe a couple of other little things. My friend was about the first on the block to have a TJ back in 97 and it has been a good jeep.
