Valve missing

I'm considering purchasing a 1981 CJ-5 with a 258. I haven't driven it yet, but the current owner said it had a valve missing that could be adjusted. I'm not an engine expert, but does this make sense? Can the valves be
adjusted? Is this a symptom of a much larger engine problem?

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Valve missing

There are dozens of valves in an engine, although usually one means intake or exhaust valves unless something else is specified. So first we would need to know what valve is missing. Second, if a valve is missing, where is it, and how are you going to adjust it?

It is possible that the engine has a miss because of an improperly adjusted intake or exhaust valve, which would be my first guess as to what he's trying to tell you. But those valves don't go out of adjustment spontaneously. If one is bad enough to cause a miss, something else is probably wrong.

You need to get some more information before we can give a good answer.
