Engine problem already

Just got my '95 Wranger Rio Grande with the 2.5 litre four banger. When I first start driving it, after a few minutes it will start making a knocking noise, and it feels like the engine is cutting out. I will have the gas pedal pushed down and it will cut out then catch again and accelerate real quick then die again, its almost like a sputter. It seems to do this at any speed in any gear. Weird part is after a minute of doing that trying to stay at a safe speed, the check engine light comes on and the egine quits doing that. It seems to run alright after the check engine light comes on. But it just does it every now and then, like maybe two or three times if I drive for an hour. I don't know what to do or where to start looking, any help is appreciated, thanks.

Re: Engine problem already

If you have an Autozone near you, they offer a free OBD reading to determine what the Check Engine is for and determine the problem. If you don't have one near you, any shop can usually read the codes, they just seem to want money.
