CJ-multiple carb related problems?

I did a nutter bypass last weekend to my CJ. I also took out all of the emissions crap. I also changed the distributor to ported vacuum. Now, trying to get it to idle at a decent speed is no problem (under 1000), but only the fast idle adjustment does anything even after it is warmed up. Is the choke not working? Last problem is I have been getting a backfire out of what I think is the exhaust when I let of the gas (mostly on upshifts). My timing is set to about 12 deg. Any help is appriciated.

Re: CJ-multiple carb related problems?

I have never been good or expert w/carburetion and ignition... My Grandfather could adj & set by ear... almost like an artist tuning in his guitar amp. Me... mostly I follow manuals and tips and my nose to get it close but rarely get it "right". Should have spent more time there and less time ...but that is another story.
I'll take a stab at this one with some basic...

here is one you can answer by having a look w/air cleaner removed. When engine cold - is choke plate (at top of carb) closed? ...fully closed? When engine warmed - is choke plate open? ...fully open? Inspect the choke linkages to be sure full movement is allowed. I seem to remember that the fast idle cam should move out of the way when choke fully opens. If yours does not... Is an obstruction that keeps choke from opening or keeps fast idle cam from moving?
Inspect the electric choke for operation ...the vac choke pull off ...all linkages ...etc

Isn't 8-10 deg BTDC spec for a 258?? Set that w/vac advance disconnected, right? With vac adv attached to ported... timing will be way advanced when clutching/shifting.

I don't think any special settings or changes are needed for CJ with both Nutter Bypass and TR Upgrade - but I do not know this so you might want to read the instructions for both and be sure.

also check this out for some specific information about the CJ Carter BBD - http://www.off-road.com/jeep/tech/258bbd/main.htm

12 deg is at the outside of spec for 258 timing. I believe it is 9 deg. + or- 3.

Re: CJ-multiple carb related problems?

The nutter does nothing to your carb... its ignition. What DID you do to your carb ?

You say choke... does it start easy - like without throttle ?... both my old bbd carter and my current weber 400 both stuck on start... stuck shut that is - and thats a total pain in the [censored] !... but VERY easy to fix -- WD40 and work it back and forth for 5mins.... that'll free it.

Thats my 2c !

The whole point of the Nutter bypass is to eliminate the computer controlling the stepper motor on the back of the carb. While it does tie into your ignition, the purpose is solely carb related.

Re: CJ-multiple carb related problems?

To clarify... the nutter i did on my jeep had no carb effect... as there was NO stepper motor... so i wouldn't know about that bit !

Plus we did a HEI at the same time... mighta got a bit confused there.

Cheers

Re: CJ-multiple carb related problems?

If you didn't have the computer controlled carb, why did you do the bypass? It's not needed for the HEI, which is a one-wire hookup if I remember.
