Help!!! 1972 CJ5 304 V8

All my electrical work but the engine won't start. It tries to turn over but it won't start. In the process of trying to turn it over it drains my battery.

Do you have a repair manual? Look for a section that shows you how to check for spark. Check to make sure your getting air into the carb (choke isn't stuck), check to make sure fuel is getting into the intake (take the air filter off and pull down the throttle on the carb while looking inside the carb to see the fuel squirt), do this with the engine off of course. Then check for spark if you have air and fuel. It could be a number of things if there is no spark, lose or broken wiring, dead coil, pick-up coil problem, ICM dead.......it's all fairly easy to fix though. Get a manual if you don't have one...try to follow it and if you need clarifcation on something......come back here. We need more info to help.

Re: Help!!! 1972 CJ5 304 V8

Thanks for responding!! I do have fuel going into the carb. and spark at the coil. The coil, wire, rotor cap, and the points are brand new. I'm going to check out my wires right now to see if they have spark and I have to regap my spark plugs. I put in the painless wiring kit. It talked about an excitor wire hooking to the alternator but I have a motorola and they don't have any info on it so I don't know where to hook it. Do you? I do have a Haynes Manual but it does not address this (excitor wire). What is an ICM? Thanks again for your help. I have been restoring the Jeep for a year now and I'd love to see it on the road!

I think an ICM is an Ignition Control Module....not to be confused with an ICBM, a missle that the dirtbag sold to the Chi-Comms so they can kill us. The ICM is the little aluminum box that hangs on the fender well and hooks to the distributor. Hey....no fair...we will be having our one-year Jeepwork anniversary in one more month and ours isn't going to be running by then. Too much work to do, and so little time. We are thinking about quitting our jobs so we will have more time to work on our CJ. Its just that little problem that comes around once a month in the mail......all those little window envelopes...DRAT!
