Best tranny swap for a buick 225

My wifes cj5 currently has a T14A behind a buick 225, does anyone know which tranny swaps in easiest?

From what I understand the SM420 is suppose to be a close fit if not a bolt up to the bell housing, adaptors are availabe from novak and AA.

How does the T98/18 solution fit up?

SM-420 would be your best choice. For more details and answers, post your question on the Jeepster board. Quite a few people over there have done this conversion. I run an automatic, so have little knowledge on specifics.

a T90 should be a direct swap in. significantly stronger. Dont the 225 bell houings have the ford pattern on the back? they were suposed to have come hooked to T-18s and T-98s. Jesse

Re: Best tranny swap for a buick 225

Although the T-90 is stronger than the T-14A's used by Jeep behind the 225 V-6's, I think more is involved trying to get a T-90 to mate up. Jeep did use T-18's behind the Buick 350 V-8's, which have the same backside as the 225. They did use a different bellhousing than the Ford's and input shaft length was different as well, if I'm not mistaken. They might have used the T-18 optionally in the V-6 CJ's. If you could find one of these with the bellhousings out of a V-6 CJ or Buick 350 V-8 Wagoneer or J-truck, you'd be set. They are a rare find though.

I run a T18 in my '71 with 225, and love it! It originally had a T14.
I suggest you check out the Early CJ5 board, where we cover all kinds of swaps on these early Jeeps:

We have a few guys in the middle of SM-420 swaps right now.
