another tbi conversion question :-)

ok, i'm still getting the parts together and while looking i found a distributor from a early 90's chevy 4.3 it is already set up for the tbi (appears to have ignition module mounted inside on the body) and was wondering if this will make life easier to do the conversion instead of converting my stock (TR) distributor. I realize that i would have to get a new gear (need to know which one of those too if i do it), but was wondering if i should get it or just modify my stock dist. thanks,

btw the distributor does not have a vacuum advance, if you take the cap off it looks just like the module is mounted on the plate on top of the body and has the connections coming out from under the cap (two plugs). the cap looks like an external coil hei style cap.

Re: another tbi conversion question :-)

Well TR'd have a few opinions on this... but me I like the HEI... and I run one on my TBI. All you're lacking is the gear... $25... so it's kind of a toss up if you ask me.

MOPAR: The proper part number is 3208615
It's the same gear use on the 83 & later V8's.

4WD Hardware Part Number: 29425

What ever you decide, figure on doing on job... then the other so you're assured one has been done correctly before the next is started.

Re: another tbi conversion question :-)

thanks leve, i was thinking about that one job at a time thing too, but if this distributor will work it will make the conversion easier i think because i wont have to modify my current distributor which sounds like a bit of a pain. this thing should just hook right up with the ECM and TBI and i wouldn't have to do all of the stuff that john is talking about on customefi.com, but that may be easier, but then i have to figure out how to wire my msd into it too, aggghhhh. thanks :-)

Re: another tbi conversion question :-)

Sorry but the 4.3 distributor won't work on your engine. the one you're looking for if you want HEI has to come from an INLINE Chevy six cylinder. The V6 distributors physically won't work with the AMC engine. The drive gear has no influence in this case. The inline HEI can be easily modified to be computer controlled for the spark timing.
