Open filter air cleaner assembly and fast idle ?

Would anyone recommend going this route on my YJ? I'm trying to clean up the maze of emissions and vacumn hoses underhood. Would it be a good idea to go to the open air filter assembly (like the old musclecars) and get rid of the stock air cleaner assembly and its TES, TAC, TVS and other stuff associated with it? Heck, even the CJ air cleaner assembly is a bit neater than the YJ ones. That would be another option.

Another thing...or question. My fast idle comes off real quick leading to a real rough idle when cold. When I start it up, it idles at 1600 rpm or so which is good. All I have to do is drive it to the corner stoplight and the idles falls off to 700 rpm or so. At this speed, it runs real crappy when cold. Is the choke thermostat that only thing that controls fast idle?
