need engine and tranny help?

hey all,
my 83 cj7 has the 258ci and the t-5 trans, the 258 needs crank and bearing, however i was looking into a chevy 305. I was wondering what you recomend, like 305 w/t-5, get the crank for the 258 and leave it in, i can't afford to get a nv4500, and i want to keep it manual. also i've been looking around and was trying to keep the modifications and cost down, like minimum amount of adapters and bellhousings that would needto be changed.

thanks,
mike

Re: need engine and tranny help?

Easiest and cheapest would be to fix up the 258. A Chevy engine will require a new bellhousing and engine frame mounts, and I think a new radiator. Plus now you have a V8 feeding the T5, which is questionable. Although guys here have run them like that. Although if you want a V8 with a minimum of adapter work, then find an AMC 304-360-401. They have the same bolt pattern as the 258, and all you would need to make the swap is a new or rebalanced flywheel and to modify one frame mount.
