Vibration Damper removal tps & tricks

Help!! I'm knee deep into a timing gear / distributor gear replacement on my 304 & can't seem to get the @%$^&% bolt holding the vibration damper out. I figured I could set everything to TDC at #1 cylinder & put the tranny in gear & turn it out, but the engine still rotates. Air tools are not an option for me. Suggestions??? Thanks.

Doh !!! I tried again with the tranny in reverse @ with the help of the handle from my floor jack, it broke loose. Thanks anyway.

Now in breaking the nut loose, I moved the timing slightly off TDC .. do I need to attempt to realign everything before I pull the damper?

Re: Vibration Damper removal tps & tricks

If you are replacing the chain, no. Pull all the plugs, it will rotate fairly easy. Put the new sprockets and chain on lining up the two marks-cam at 6 oclock, crank at 12 oclock. I would recommend changing the chain if you are not. You are inside and the pita thing is easy then. Put it back together and it will go out on you-Murphy's Law. Might as well change everything so it times well.

Thanks, Brhino .. yep, I'm replacing the chain also with an Edlebrock tru double roller set. I'm also replacing the distributor drive gear (the main reason for doing all this now) and the fuel pump.
