401 buildup??

Anyone have any great info on an AMC 401 buildup. What specs are good to shoot for in regards to disp, cam specs, head work and so on. Is it worth it or should the 360 get the money? Does anyone have a 401 in there jeep and what are some realistic hp and torque #s to shoot for. Thanks.

Pat, he said REALISTIC !!!!!!!!
Coleboy, I have one that is about 350 hp (just a guess). It makes plenty of torque though. Be prepared for the rest of the destruction of your drivetrain. You must have some HD stuff with a 401, or any other hi-torque engine..
Start saving your money now for parts........

Re: 401 buildup??

I figured it would be pretty expensive. What kind of power difference am I going to see between a 360 and a 401. More cubes usually means more power for the same price but how hard would it be to get 350 lb ft or torque out of a 360?

Re: 401 buildup??

Hi Cole,

I have a CJ7 with a 401 in it. It has a mild cam, Edelbrock performer carb (with K&N filter) , Juicebox ignition, headers. Works for me...
I've been having trannie probs (TH400), so at the advice of Tim (The transmission repair guy), I rompped on it yesterday, and scared the heck out of myself! I lifted the front tires!

Here's a web address that may help...

They have stuff like aluminum heads, and other racing stuff.

Ther builder of my engine told me it rated about 400hp...

Hope it helps,
