Has the 258 ever NOT had a timing chain??

I have a friend who had someone tell him that the 258 at one time had timing GEARS, rather than a chain. I had thought it was always a chain.

His 258 (a '77) is having starting problems, and I think it could be the timing chain. Battery/cables/grounds/etc, are all new. Motor doesn't turn over well - it 'chugs'. Disconnect the distributor and it still does it, so it's not ignition-based. I told him I thought it was the chain, and then some other friend told him his 258 had gears, so it couldn't be the chain. I KNOW my 88 has a chain, because I replaced it. Did the older 258s NOT have a chain?

Comments?
Thanks!
Pete

they all had chains..
i really can see no reason to put a gear drive into a 258.....let me guess... for those 8000 RPM runs down the drag strip.....

The GM 250ci straight 6 doesn't have a chain. The gear on the cam mates directly with the gear on the crank. Maybe this was what someone whas thinking of??

All the 258's I've ever had 81, 82 & 84 had chains. I don't recall ever hearing of a 258 with gears.

Do they even make a gear drive for the 258?

I guess if you like that gear whine, but wtf, oh well.

Yes, MoPar makes a gear drive for the 199-232-258-244. seems to me that clifford also makes one.

I think he meant the 4.0, but I'm not sure if it is a 244. I was thinking 242, but I can't remember. (I don't have one of those newfangled machines)
