Has the 258 ever NOT had a timing chain??
I have a friend who had someone tell him that the 258 at one time had timing GEARS, rather than a chain. I had thought it was always a chain.
His 258 (a '77) is having starting problems, and I think it could be the timing chain. Battery/cables/grounds/etc, are all new. Motor doesn't turn over well - it 'chugs'. Disconnect the distributor and it still does it, so it's not ignition-based. I told him I thought it was the chain, and then some other friend told him his 258 had gears, so it couldn't be the chain.
