need advice

I just bought a 79 CJ7 with a Chevy 350. Both moter mounts are broke and there are some oil leaks. My question is should I rebuid this engine and add fuel injection or would I be better off dropping in a 4.3, I've heard that it would bolt up to my turbo 400 is that correct? Any help would be great. I was also wondering about the pro's and con's of replacing body panels vs. the whole tub?

If it were me and its not I would stick with a 350 . You could rebuild the motor and add injection later or you could look for a late model used 350 TBI engine complete with the computer and harness` . They are quite reasonable , around here anyways . Last time I was at the local auto wrecker here they had 3 of them , still in the vehicles and complete , they were asking 800 bucks (CAN$$)with everything . 3 month warrantee .
As for your body panels , if you`ve got something solid to weld to then you can . If I would have had a 7 opposed to the CJ5 I have I think I would have opted for the YJ tub swap .
I made all my own panels but it was a lot of work and a lot of welding

Re: need advice

Keep the 350. It is by far the most common engine around, very reliable, and powerful. The 4.3 is basically a SBC with two cylinders cut off. It will swap all front parts(water pump, timing cover, etc) It will also bolt right up to your T-400. The problem is the 400 is a heavy duty trans and takes a lot of power to turn, and will sap the strength of a 4.3. Stick with the good ol' 350, and replace the motor mounts.
Depending on your intended use of your CJ, and the general condition, patching the tub will be cheaper in the long run. If it is in rough shape, replacing the tub is easier and cheaper. If it is fairly stright and rust-free, patch away.

Re: need advice

If it were me I'd definately keep the 350 and add the fuel injection. As far as the body goes it's hard to determine with out seeing it, but if it has bad body cancer then replaceing it would be the best way to go.
