89 jeep won\'t start after a puddle

I went thru a small puddle about a foot deep a couple times and once a little faster about 5-10 mph with no problems then I was leaving and as I let out the clutch to pull out on the street it died. It didn't sputter or bog down, just stalled and after a while of trying to start it back up it tried to catch a few times put no go. The air intake tube had water residue but the air filter was pretty much dry. The tube looks bad so maybe it seeped a bit into the carb. The starter now won't crank over the motor, just spins/ maybe its tired and very hot to work, i'll try again tomorrow for sure. I've driven through 2 foot+ deep water with some sputtering once but this is weird... Hopefully it will start tomorrow.

Glad to here it. If that happens again, like Yjforever said, check your distributor. A lot of times moisture can get in there when you get it wet, like in mud puddles and when cleaning the engine.

Re: 89 jeep won\'t start after a puddle

I siliconed the hell out of my distributor to keep puddles (or deep water) from getting to it.

I also drove out of a few deep water/mud holes on the starter, so I know they are fairly resistant to water-damage...

wipe out the cap with a clean rag and spray a dab of wd-40 into it. also before you go and buy a new/rebuilt starter (i recommend the rebuilt from your local chain store - lifetime warranty, gotta love that and usually no more than $45) but before you go an do that pull the neg bat cable, unhook the hot wire to the starter, clean it off really well with a dry rag, same for the connection on the starter, pull the starter and clean the mating surfaces really well and dry them, re-install and try again.
