Oil on outside of engine. Bad Gasket? Nope . . .
When looking under the hood before buying my cj about a month ago, everything seemed to be in working order. A little dirty, but what can you expect from a 28year old Jeep? Anyhow, I've been working on it and haven't had much of a chance to get it out on the road until this past weekend. It has to be able to handle highway speeds so that I can get it out to Ohio and back, so we took it up to Hickory and back from Charlotte.
The drive went great and the Jeep handled it much better than expected; however, when we looked under the hood again it had a bit of wet oil on the outside of the engine. We checked everything to make sure it was all nice and tight, but found the problem when we went to change the valve cover gasket.
Problem -- there wasn't one there to change. The previous owner -- instead of buying a new gasket when the old one went bad -- had used nothing but silicone to create a seal, which doesn't work too well on a Jeep. Especially when you do nothing else to it as far as maintenance.
Anyhow, we replaced the gasket and everything is fine now.
