spare carrier on bumper question

yeah i did a search but no find answer

will fab a carrier on my home-built bumper. will use some stout 1-1/2" tube that i picked up at my local welding shop.

question- what can i use for the pivot-point or hinge mechanism if you will? then i also need to figure out a latch device to keep it closed. i'm sure i can come up with something but your idea might be better

any pics?

Re: spare carrier on bumper question

The ultimate hinge is available from rockstomper. It's a machined axle hub. The cheap solution would be to use solid bar stock for the pin and tubing for the pivot. That's what I am doing right now. If your bumper is already painted you could use a 1 inch bolt instead of welding the bar stock. Just remember to grease heavily. There are plenty of latches on mcmastercarr.com. The cheap way is a large bolt with bar stock welded to the top to make a T shape. You can screw it down tight by hand and it won't rattle.

For the hinge, goto http://www.carrlane.com/product/06TC54.htm

I used the middle latch for mine. Everything seems to work fine, but they are going to get tested this weekend.

yo nenofury

thanks for the rockstomper tip- here's the <a target="_blank" href=http://linkhttp://www.rockstomper.com/catalog/pieces/hinge.htm>linkhttp://www.rockstomper.com/catalog/pieces/hinge.htm</a>

i'm not quite getting the install of it though. i have a 2x6 tube bumper. i need to either weld a pivot to the top of the bumper OR drill a hole in the top and bottom of bumper and feed a long bolt through. not sure the rockstomper will work for me?

tjay

looks like the latch has to attach to the end of the bumper and not the top?

Re: spare carrier on bumper question

Yeah you are going to have to drill holes in the top and bottom of the bumper. This is probably the hardest part since you have to keep them in perfect alignment. Yeah, with a 2x6 bumper the rockstomper won't work as it is only 8inches overall. Looks like a rod or bolt is your best bet.

Re: spare carrier on bumper question

I just ordered a hinge from Rockstomper. I know it won't work with your application, but I'd be more than happy to let you know how it works, or give you some specs so you can build a similar one.

Re: spare carrier on bumper question

thanks jammy
i think i got it now after seeing what's out there on the market. i can make a set-up just as good if not better. i'll weld a bolt to top of bumper and weld a sleeve at end of carrier to slide down the bolt.
