TJ-The axle debate goes on and on.......

I have a chance to get a front D44 for $1600 with the following specs:

'79 Ford RC D44 with:
-bracketing for a TJ (less the sway bar mounts)
-new ARB air locker
-new 4.56 gears
-new seals and bearings throughout
-new warn premium hublocks
-new warn high strength alloy shafts with new 5-760x u-joints
-new hubs, rotors, calipers, and ball joints
-Avalanche rock guard
-u-bolt style front yoke

I would pull and sell the ARB(just don't want it) and put in a Detroit, the thing is, I would have to covert my rear 44 to 5 on 5.5 and get another set of rims. This same guy has a set of Avalanche beadlocks that have been off the trailer one time(so he says) for $690, they are 15x10.

Or, I can get a XJ D30, put my alloy shafts in, get CTM joints and just worry about the ring gear going.

I have the cash to get the 44 but I don't plan on ever putting more power into my 4.0. Currently, I am running 37 MTR's with 4.56's. What would you do?????

Re: TJ-The axle debate goes on and on.......

I dont own a TJ but I have seen many on the trails and I have never seen a D30 brake. For instance last weekend a guy was down in a hole and broke both axle shafts at the same time in his 35. He used light pressure with his winch and pulled out with only the front axle. In my opinion I would keep the 30 until you brake it or bend it, and all of this is coming from a guy with front and rear 60's. LOL

If I remember right, you have 37" goodyears. The reverse cut dana 30 is stronger than the standard cut dana 30 but with 37's it might be pushing it a little. That said, if you go with the XJ dana 30, you'll need to install locking hubs on it. I read that the CTM's won't last long if they spin all the time.

Rich, do it baby..... Is the width of the 44 going to be ok for you? If so, Get the 44 and change out the rear pattern. Then you will have a "real" jeep lug pattern (other than 8 lug of course) and a set of sweet beadlocks.
Is there any problem converting the rear? I don't know much about that deal... Do it ........

Right on Ricky. Build it for the future. I doubt the 30 will live that long with 37's. I've seen pics and know where you wheel...........................and who you wheel with.
Besides.......do you think Chris and Pat will ever let you live it down? Well maybe I shouldn't put it that way. They will give you heck with anything less than a 60 too.

Dude either build a 60 or just keep your 30 since the only real benifit of a 44 since you already have locking hubs is bigger ring gear.

The D44 will definitely hold up very well, to any abuse you will give it with 37" tires and a strong 4.0 HO.
