1 u-joint down, how many to go?!

Well, I finally did it!! I broke a u-joint in my rear driveline. Actually, it was the chinsey strap that let go. Time to get those nice little u-bolt type ones for the u-joints. Any tips on getting the remans of my old ones off? It snapped one of my bolts off in the pinion yoke. Drill it? Am I going to need to drill it out to for the new u-bolt straps?

i would think you gotta get that stud out of the yoke. the u-bolts have to use the same holes or another yoke right? how about drill a small hole in the stud and try an easy-out? good luck

Sometimes you can grab the bolt from the other side with vice-grips and unscrew it out the back of the yoke.
If you can't do that, you'll have to use an easy-out and hope it doesn't break off in there

You will have to drill the hole out for the U-bolt type. I'd try to get the broken bolt out first though, if you try to drill it out now, and the bit is not perfectly centered in the broke bolt, you'll have a huge mess on your hands.

Pretty common James. I never changed mine to u-bolts either. It's on my to do list with the axles.
I gotta know though........... did you break it in the lawn and garden section at work?

If it hasn't been that long since you last removed the bolts, the easy out should get them out easily. When I broke those bolts a couple years ago, they came out easy. You can also spend about $25 and get a new yoke made for u-bolts.

Get a new yoke, setup for the u-bolt style.. that way you won't have a part that has been comprimised by your drilling it out, and has already been stressed from the strap breakage.

heres what you do.
drill that sucker out and toss the u-bolts in it. then TONIGHT order the new yoke set up for u-bolts. this way your driving till the right one arrives, AND you'll have a really nice trail spare.

Elusive beat me to it, though i'm not sure how you would change a yoke with out an impact on the trail.
