Backfiring CJ7

First, let me start by saying I am a novice here so please excuse what might be a dumb question. I have a stock 84 CJ7 258 (Weber Carb, I know..). Lately as I am cruising on the highway and let off the gas I get backfire out the tailpipe. It does not happen under acceleration, but typically when I am coasting. Is this a timing problem, valves, etc. Just a little direction would be appreciated.

Although it is amusing to see people hit the ground when I drive through the ghetto part of town.

Re: Backfiring CJ7

Check your distributor vacuum advance.
the ignition is too far advanced when you let off the thorttle.
My guess either too much advance from leaking/ faulty vacuum advanve, or really slack timing chain.
