tire carrier hinge

Hey people, I'm working on my rear bumoer and tire carrier design. I have a CJ5 with Glass tub and no tailgate. I do have a tool box in the back that I access from the rear of the jeep. Ease of access to that tool box is the only reason I care to have a swing out carrier. question is, what have some of you done for a hinge. I'm familiar with RockStomper trailer spindle hindge and if I can't thinkup something else to do, maybe I'll go that route, but I'd rather fab it from scratch. I've come up with a post and sleeve option where the sleeve is welded to the carrier, but trying to figure some other options too. the biggest tire could see ever going with is a 35 after I do my SOA.

any picts of hinges would be appreciated too.

Thanks
Brent

Re: tire carrier hinge

Tractor Supply trailer spindle and hub = $20, slightly less than Northern. I think Jeepgod has a write up on his site (he doesn't have a carrier, so maybe it was Elusive's that was documented?)

Re: tire carrier hinge

I made mine using brass bearings and 2" heavy wall tubing. I don't remember the specifics but I have all the specs somewhere. I used the destaco toggle clamp and got the bearings/washers from McMaster Carr.

Re: tire carrier hinge

The link that bluesman2a put up, i followed the colorful picture exactly. i got the axle stub and bearings from northern and did exactly what this picture says. Works great, extremely strong, i have opened it up full with hi lift, 35" tire and my skinny 130 pound arse on it. The hinge has no play whatsoever in it.
Peace
Andrew

Re: tire carrier hinge

Mine is made from a broken AMC 20 rear axle shaft. It goes all the way throught the bumper with the threaded nut underneath. It's then welded top and bottom, then has a sleeve over it that is welded to the carrier. Keep it greased and it's totally bulletproof.
