Spare Tire Mount On Hood

Has anyone mounted a full size spare to the hood of a YJ before. I know that the hood is not supported enough for just bolting one on; but is there any easy modifications that I could make to put a 31" spare on it?

I guess I want the practicality of the Land Rovers of old...

Re: Spare Tire Mount On Hood

see i never got that...a lot of the weight of the jeep is on the front end anyways with the engine and custom bumpers and winches.....i think the spare tire would best be left in the back...either in the back seat or on the tire carrier...

however if you REALLLY wanted to, i suppose you could weld in some angle iron to the inside of the hood so it doesnt cave in, then attache the tire mount to that same angle iron. just make sure all the weight is on the angle iron and that the angle iron follows the curve of the hood down to the edges so it doesnt cave in.

I don't have any pictures but there is a YJ here in town that has a roof rack mounted spare and a hood mounted spare.

How the hell do you see with a tire on your hood? And why does that guy need two spares? Extra insurance?

It's also got a snorkle, the exhaust turns up above the tub at the back, the rack on the back has extra gas cans. It is lifted about 4" with 33" BFG AT's.

I have to agree that you already have a lot of weight on the front end. And how are you ever going to see past a tire on your hood.

Re: Spare Tire Mount On Hood

Will, Ive seen that Jeep around also. I wander if he has ever used any of that stuff or just likes the way it looks. I've never seen any amount of dirt or mud on it. If you ask me I think it looks a little dorky with a spare on the hood of a Jeep. Save it for the Land Rovers...

Re: Spare Tire Mount On Hood

I agree with everyone else there is just no room for it on the hood, the weight issue I think would be fine but the police might say somthing about the obstuction of your view. On the back is the best.
