Question about directly wiring temp gauge - sender

A few years back when I had the wiring harness replaced on my Jeep, there wasn't anything to plug into the sending unit for the temp gauge. I've gone throught the thing a couple of dozen times, but I can't seem to figure out what wire goes to the sending unit. Does anyone know if I can run a wire directly to the gauge from the sender ?
Also, can somebody explain to me how the gauge works with the unit itself ?
Thanks....

Re: Question about directly wiring temp gauge - se

Looks like no one is going to touch this one...
That's a shame too because this is an honest question from a guy that hasn't caused any trouble here I can remember...
<hr>

Power to the gauge head, grounds through the 'Sending' unit (temp sensor).

The warmer it gets, the more current can pass through the sensor to ground and the higher the needle reads.

Gauges and sensors have to be matched to each other, so you can't just use what ever is already there or what's cheapest.... (unless you get REALLY lucky)

Maybe <a target="_blank" href=http://www.monsterslayer.com/jeep/Gauges.htm>this</a> will help.

Thanks TeamRush and Will...
That sight is very useful. Between the info here and the guys in my shop, I realized that I have a decent amount of wire tracing to do this weekend. I'll let you know how it ends up.

I'd rather discuss politics, religion and sports in a room full of hornets than do factory gauges!

Thank god for AutoMeter!
