OT - Can Carfax ever be wrong ?!?

I was planning to buy this '94 Grand Cherokee in MD for the price of $7600 with 64000K on it but there is a problem. Apparently it has a VA salvage title. The thing is, I looked it over to to bottom and I couldn't see signs of previous accident of any kind. Can Carfax be wrong? It it's true I wouldn't be able to get full coverage on it in VA (if I could get it titled at all). What a bummer. It looks spotless and drives nice too. What could have happened? What to do?

Comment Definitions
Salvage/Junk Title States issue salvage titles when an insurance company takes possession of a vehicle as a result of a claim. This generally occurs after a vehicle has been declared a total loss. States issue junk titles to indicate that a vehicle is not road worthy and cannot be titled again in that state.

Re: OT - Can Carfax ever be wrong ?!?

Only scenario I can figure is the car was stolen and not recovered, so the insurance company paid the owner on the claim, then the car was recovered, but it was OK. Since they had already paid on a claim they had to apply for a salvage title to get ownership to sell it.

I figured something along those lines but I wasn't sure how it all works. Still, even if I buy it and able to title it in VA again I won't be able to get full coverage on it. I'm not sure if I should go with that. Maybe if he drops the price to $4000...

Another problem you might have is that most financial institutions will not loan money on a vehicle that has a Salvage title. That is unless you are going to pay cash or do some kind of a trade.

First off, one number or letter out of place when the data entry person was doing your VIN, and you have the wrong info...
So YES, they can be wrong.
It's just not very likely...

There are a lot of ways to total a car out...
The one that is getting the most attention now is the flood cars.
If the car was in a flood on a dealer lot, and water entered the cockpit, it's an automatic total by federal law.

Pull the carpets and floor mats back to see if you can find a water line...

I had a friend that bought a 'Salvage Title' car.
It was in a hail storm, and had to have 170 hail dents pulled and be repainted.
The body shop guys had it done in less than a week.

It is the coolist thing to watch them pull hail dents!
The heat the area with a heat gun (doesn't even blister the paint) and then sock a wet rag soaked in ice water on the dent.
You can actually heat the dent pop out!
A little spot filler and some paint, and you can't tell the car was ever damaged.

Doesn't matter if the car is brand new, a lot of states require that if a dealer has the car and it is damaged to where the car has to have paint on it, the car MUST be sold as 'Used' or 'Salvage'.

Re: OT - Can Carfax ever be wrong ?!?

Exactly Aaron. Since I work at a yard I see it all the time. My wifes car is salvage. Needed a door and fender. Bought it for $8000 under retail..........FIXED!
I see them all the time with next to no damage that get "totalled" and have to have a salvage title. (we had a 99 metro with a dent in the fender and needed a headlight!!!!!! that was salvage)
Actually my take on this is................I love salvage cars...............they make great AFORDABLE drivers that I can get my money(all of it) back out of after driving it for 3 + years.
Try that in your off the lot car.
