CJ7 front driveshaft twisted and bent

I was playing at the local mud bogg park this past weekend when a spectator told me that my front driveshaft was broken. I raised my hinged inspection cover so I could see the driveshaft. It wasn't broken, just bent severly. I was in about 3 foot of mud, so I decided to drive it out in 4wd. When I got home I found the front spring hangers pointing towards the rear. I pried them back down and found that I gained about an inch of play in the slip yoke on the driveshaft. I normally have about 2.5 inches of slip. The shop that built the driveshaft assured me that I would break the universal joints before bending or twisting the driveshaft. It does appear to be twisted as well as bent. I had gone over a couple of hills and the front end had left the ground a little. I have a 4 inch spring under lift with 3 inches of body lift and 35 inch tires. Now for my questions.
1. Did going over the hills and landing hard cause the axle to move back far enough to bend the driveshaft by decreasing the amount of slip?
2. Did the spring hangers locking in the up position and decreasing the amount of slip cause the driveshaft to bend?
3. Was the driveshaft built using incorrect size and grade of steel?
Any suggestions for any of this appreciated.

Re: CJ7 front driveshaft twisted and bent

If it's the stock (1-1/4"?) front driveshaft, I don't think you can blame it on one moment that it twisted. I had mine in for about a year after getting a new one and it had developed a bend in it. I took it to the driveline shop that built it and when I called to check on it, he said it was bent from being twisted. He said it's just not a stout tube and recommended going to a 2" or larger tube. Next time...

i twisted mine by just popping the wheels in the air during a hill climb and landing under power.there was ripple in it that looked like a corkscrew and the uni's where about 45 degree out of alignment.i agree with Will, the stock ones are way too weak....
