Pigpen: let me know what you find out on that, I'd like to know. I've been told by the original owner of the 74 I recently bought that when he rebuilt the 304 he used 401 heads, but I don't now if thats true or not.

they should be the same. I belive that 360 & 401 use the same heads.

The heads from a 304,360,and 401 all should bolt on ,however there were differances in the early heads (i think pre 1971),the center bolt holes in the intake.
the 360/401 also use a larger valve size, and you need to check to see if this valve size will clear the bore diameter

Not sure about this myself, but a friend of mine that runs an amc v-8 said that 360 heads are not interchangable to a 304. I didn't ask about the 401. Steve

Re: AMC 304-401 Heads alike?

Jeep Freak is right. Actually the 290,304,343,360,390,& 401 heads will all work. But there is one thing you need to watch out for, the older motors(290,some 304's,343, & 390's) had different bolt holes for the intake. I am actually using an old style set of 360 heads that are very closed chambered with screw-in studs and using chevy Crain roller rockers. I used a newer style Eldebrock intake and took a drimmel tool to slot the center bolt holes to match the intake gasket and put the thing on. If you take any V8 intake gasket and look at the center bolt holes you will see that they are slotted to fit the new style or the old style.

Any way, sorry to be so long winded, my .02.
