God did not want my Jeep to have Fuel Guage

I have had 3 different fuel guages in my Jeep and none of them work. The original was broken, I got one from 4 Wheel Harware, it burned up, probaly when I shorted two wires. It was a flimsy looking thing. I got one from Quadratech, put it in and it worked for a brief period. I took it out and took the face off the guage. The actuating pin had slipped out of the groove in the indicator needle. I fixed it and out it back in and it only worked a brief period again. It is a 2 hour trip in and 2 back out for me to get into the guage. I have to move the RWS9000 control, stereo, take off the dash, windshield pad, tach, Brake Lever Lock, and finally get the cluster out.

Has anyone had this experience and what did you do to get the guage workng?

When I bought my Jeep the fuel gauge never read acurately. Then it stopped working all together. I just assumed the gauge was bad so I ordered another one. I replaced it and it still doesn't work. My tests point to a bad sending unit (from what I remember..it's been a while). I'll replace that next, once I get around to it. BTW mine is an 83.

Nope .I have replaced mine .It doesn't work either.let me rephrase that it somewhat works but the accuracy is questionable..I got rid of the whole CJ cluster since the speedo didn't work either the temp gauge was not even hooked up most ot the lights were out or missing.I have not replaced the sending unit ,it is easier to just fill it every few days.

Comandments:
1. Don't buy the cheap gauges ... OEM Stewart Warners for your own sakes.
2. Read Jaffer's Gauge Article at www.monsterslayer.com/jeep/Gauges.htm and follow HIS instructions to the letter!

Only then will you be truly blessed with accurate gauge readings.
Amen.

On the accuracy thing,
I just replaced my tank and sender and found something kind of interesting. I too had a gauge accuracy issue until I changed the sender. My gauge would not read completely full nor would it read completely empty.
When I removed my sender, and upon inspection, I found that the small brass contact that moves up and down the small coil of wires was worn down to the point that at least 1/8” of the tip was completely gone. This made the contact shorter, which would cause it to move across the coil in a smaller arc.
It reads perfect now.

I guess the moral is:
When trouble shooting, don’t forget that you have a gauge that reacts to the position of the sender.
