Lets have a debate! 360 swap, new exhaust manifold?

I am about ready to swap in my 360 and I saw another post about this so I think we should put it to rest.

Will the STOCK 360 exhaust manifolds ( passenger side I think?) work in a CJ5 ????

I have made many posts and gotten many answeres about this. I have heard that it wont clear and hits the steering I think. Then I have heard people hear and on pirate 4x4 bbs tell me that it worked fine in their rig.

I have not heard anyone say that they have had it work in a five, only 7s and 8s???

So whats the deal??? Has anyone put a 360 into a CJ5 using the stock exhaust manifolds??? If so let me know.

I need to know. We have a lack of used jeep parts around here, so Idont want to pull my 258 and then relieze I need a manifold and have to have the jeep down for 2 months while I chase it around.

Thanks
Tony

I've heard that there was a rear dump and center dump for the drivers side. I haven't seen the rear dump though. If your drivers side is center dump, you should be fine. I posted some pictures the last time this came up, did you find them in your search?

Re: Lets have a debate! 360 swap, new exhaust manifold?

I have a CJ7 so this may not be helpful info, but, the drivers side manifold from my 82 wagoneer donor was "rear" dump. I was told by a local jeep shop that it was a "newer" style manifold. The manifold would have worked fine with my steering shaft, but was a problem with my auto trans linkage (I had the engine installed and running before I realized this). I traded the guys at the jeep shop for a "center" dump old style manifold (from a jeep with a 304). It does not interfere with anything. I think the center dump is probably easier for the exhaust guys to get the pipe properly bent, and it is further from the floor boards so you don't have to deal with burnt paint, and hot floors in the summer.

Good Luck

Shawn

Re: Lets have a debate! 360 swap, new exhaust manifold?

all of the amc V8s ive seen from wagoneers and other Full sized Jeeps have the rear dump driverside manifold, where a factory CJ V8 has a center dump driver side manifold.

the problem is the clutch linkage, or transmission linkage ( auto)

I think if you gotot hydraulic clutch it should work, IM hoping, cause thats my plan!

ive got a 5 360, wag manifolds, and hydraulic clutch.

What jeepfinder said... I put a left rear dump in and traded it out for a left center dump when I saw how close it was to my CJ7's firewall. I would think the fit would be similar for your CJ5.

FWI:

All the 1970+ V8 AMC cars, CJs and 1979 and earlier SJ/J10s/20s have the center dump left manifold.

1980 and up SJs (Grand Wagoneers), J10/20s have the rear dump left exhaust manifold (to clear the front driveline better).

There is only one style right manifold after 1970.

Good Luck

Re: Lets have a debate! 360 swap, new exhaust manifold?

My donor rig is a 80 cherokee, so rear dump manifolds.

I am running a T18, with non hydraulic clutch.

What AMC cars came with the V8??? So I can search for one of these. Probably cheaper then a CJ manifold.

Thanks
Tony
