weird volt meter readings

I was running the Jeep today and noticed my volt meter jumping around (more so than normal) . Sometimes when I gave it more pedal, it would peg out past 16 volts and when I left off, back to 13-14. It normally just runs between 13-15 volts. Is that the alternator going bad or is it the gauge ground? I did the TR upgrade and it's the 258, I didn't know if running that type of coil might have something to do with it or not. When I pulled into the driveway it was running the normal 14-15 volts and held there at idle. So i just called it a night and was hoping to resort to you guys.

thanks,

Jud

Re: weird volt meter readings

Your TFI coil shouldn't have anything to do with it. Sounds like a bad ground or a faulty gauge.

Re: weird volt meter readings

You might want to check your regulator as well.

Re: weird volt meter readings

On some alternators there is a wire that runs from the output lug to a connector an inch away on the alternator housing. This carries output voltage to the internal regulator. If the connection gets loose or corroded the regulator will see low voltage and kick up the output, causing the symptoms you describe.

Re: weird volt meter readings

Like everyone's said - voltage regulator. I managed to blow out not one, but two sets of headlights before taking the time out discover my problem. I was running in the 16 volt range at higher rpms as well. All the lights get REALLY bright with that much juice
