Daimler-Chrysler Wins there latest battle.....

D-C has pressured the owner of www.hardcorejeep.com into closing down his web page because of his use of the Jeep name in the title of the web page.

The site did at one time have some pretty risque pictures of Jeep babes that might have been an excuse for D-C to jump on this guy, but he removd the pictures in an attempt to keep the page open.

D-C would not back down and used what I consider their corporate muscle to force him to shut down the page....I am a long time jeep lover, but I am truely ashamed right now to own Jeep products or D-C products for that matter.

I really don't like the way D-C pushes people around. Its one thing to sue another big corporation for stealing what you consider to be your trademark (the grill), but this guy wasn't making money off the Jeep name and I think its really $hitty of D-C to be suck *****s.

I don't necessariliy agree with everyone on everything, but I don't think he was doing anything wrong enough to cause D-C to take the route they took. You can get further details on the hardcore web page or on the Rockcrawler BBS.

But too late now,,,,I think I'm going to send them an email and let them know how I feel, this just takes something away from what I feel to be a Jeep owner (and Dodge owner),,,sorry I'm through venting now

Re: Daimler-Chrysler Wins there latest battle.....

I dont approve of how the Krauts have ruined Chrysler...the assberty, er, i mean, liberty, putting IFS on the RAM! AHHHH...no I dont approve of this!

But, I can understand them being anal about the Jeep name and trademark. In the automotive industry (very competitive) the Jeep name and everything that comes with it, the history, the grille, the whole concept of Jeep, is something D/C owns. They were right, there really is "Only one Jeep." Getting on some guys back about a little website might be a little overkill...but if they start overlooking this one, and that one...It'd snowball out of control.

Now I'm not saying I AGREE with D/C, I'm just saying I UNDERSTAND them....

Re: Daimler-Chrysler Wins there latest battle.....

I definately see both sides of the story. Nathan, the guy who runs hardcorejeep.com has had a controversial track record for awhile. I remember I used to read the rec.auto.makers.jeep+willys (RAMJAW) newsgroup when he started the site. There was a lot of fuss over the "Jeep Babes". He had lots of pictures that were well beyond "soft core".

I think the guy just likes a lot of attention. DC sent him a letter, offering to drop the charges COMPLETELY if he would surrender all of his domain names that have "jeep" in them. He used to have the letter posted, I don't see it now. However, looking at his website now, it looks like he is finally cooperating and giving it up. He had registered "jeeprubicon.com", saying that he intended to start a user website for Rubicon mods and such. Naturally, DC wanted this domain.. badly.

If you watch the newscasts he has on his website.. the WRAL one was good.. listen to his accent!

I cant speak for hardcorejeep but an aquaintence of mine owns/runs moparchat.com plus 4 or 5 other mopar type domains. He has never had any flak from mopar at all. In fact the mopar factory tech guys visit the forums on moparchat regularly. He does provide links from his sites to the official Mopar site but other than that he hasn't been hassled and doesn't pay them anything.

Re: Daimler-Chrysler Wins there latest battle.....

I can understand the DC bunch and their insistence on keeping control of their product name and trade mark. You remember a few years back when Harley Davidson sued the Nips to protect their stolen motorcycle design even to the extent that they claimed that the SOUND was owned by HD. I sometimes get weary of the impunity that some of these "pirates" demonstrate when they outright steal designs from other companies and individuals, and I am a firm believer in copyright and patent protection. It's true that the new Geman owners HAVE made changes in the Jeep line and that some of them DO reflect the pavement-only, suburban, latte-drinking, have-no-idea-what-FWD-actually-is crowd, but that's only corporate recognization of where the next vein of gold is from a market standpoint. Product change is NORMAL, and without those kinds of forward-looking moves, companies CAN and DO die! Let X equal the number of good products and companies that have disappeared because they had a stubborn chief engineer who would NOT change a thing on "his" design......maybe one that he dreamed up twenty years ago.....and consequently their willing-to-change competition left them behind. When Shev-Lay was still building cars with that antiquainted Shev-Lay Six.....we called it a "stove bolt......not sure where that name actually came from.....clear up to 1954, it was no small miracle that the dealers were even able to SELL new cars, except maybe because of the Chevrolet tradition and the superb bodies that they had on them. Everything else on that Shivel-A was YEARS behind the times. I've BEEN part of a corporate design group I KNOW how tough it is to get a crotchety old cheif engineer to let go of "his" design from way back. Whenever I find myself thinking: "Hey; they are ruining Jeep by making that yuppie pavement-running piece of crap!" I think about what Henry Ford is alleged to have said when the first of the Model A's rolled off the assembly line: "Take a good look at her boys; they'll never improve on THAT baby!"
