Is TR upgrade really going to do anything for me?

First of all, I will apologize for being late to class, I have been off line for a while. I have been searching and reading posts about it, but I can't find any that discribe what it fixes. My 83' 258 is all original. It seems to have OK power, but it will only go up to 3000 rpm. The worst thing that has happened to me with it was when the distributor cap got moisture inside it after I drove through a big puddle too fast. I think water got in where the vac advance linkage goes in, it looks way to exposed there. That almost canceled a great day of wheeling. (it took me a couple hours to figure out exactly what happened)

Anyhow, I want to tinker with the distrubitor because of that incident, so I was thinking of doing the TR upgrade. I just wondered if I will notice any difference.

Thanks!

From what I've always heard, you'll notice quite a difference with the TR upgrade. I don't really know the specifics on it, but do know you end up putting a larger cap on there, which gets ya better spark, or atleast helps from cross firing.

Sure it will do something for you...
It will give you something to blame for everything that goes wrong for the next year or two.
You know, cat running away, daughter knocked up, flat tires, taxes going up, coke going flat, broken windshields, son coming home with a nose ring and green hair, ect...

That explains my taxes. I thought it was the county wide reassessment, but it was that darn TR upgrade I did last summer.
Yes, the upgrade is worth it. Why do you think there are so many of us that have done it?

Water in the distributor cap is a problem with any ignition that's not waterproofed. The TR upgrade won't prevent your engine from dying if you drive through a puddle.

What it will do for you is bring your engine back to life. More power, smoother idling/acceleration, better gas mileage and higher revs. This upgrade is the single best thing you can do to your stock ignition without spending major bucks.

i just did the tr upgrade and yeah the cap adapter fits better that the stock cap as far as gaps, but there is still that big gap by the advance, what i did was took a piece of a plastic snuff can and fitted it over the gap and sealed it with rtv silicone and took someone elses advice and ran a vent hose from the top of the cap. havent gone swimming yet, but it looks like it will work.

oh yeah, almost forgot, its worth it, i spent about 70 bucks for the parts (didnt get the coil yet, ordering that with the msd6 ign) but that included adapter, premium cap, rotor, premium 8mm wires, plugs, and a tube of rtv (got the can of kodiak from a friend). i would hav spent aslmost that much for the regular tune up parts.

I definitly reccomend it. It smoothed out my idle, and got rid of a flat spot off the line.

You'll probably get better gas mileage, a smoother idle, better combustion = more power, and most noticably, if you take that long stroke 258 over 3000RPMs, you wont have the cross-firing between terminals...the larger cap spaces the terminals farther apart to prevent this.

Thanks all.

So is this what I need ? (copied from another post)

From '82 Ford F-150 pickup with 300 CID I-6
Distributor Cap Adaptor
Distributor Cap & Rotor with BRASS TERMINALS

One set of premium spark plug wires from a '95 Jeep with 4.0 Liter engine.

The ignition coil from a '92 Ford Escort with I-4 Engine
A Coil connector from NAPA, P/N ICC-1

Thanks again, will try the water proof idea too.
