SOA vs. SUA

I've been planning on converting to SOA on my CJ8 but are there any serious disadvantages when compared to the spring under factory set up? I've heard of axle wrap in the rear and wheel hop, but can't that be solved with a traction bar?

Re: SOA vs. SUA

Search the shortwheelbase section. Enter "soa traction bar", choose "and", choose "all posts". Set your maximum to what you would like.

You'll find threads like this one: <a target="_blank" href=http://tellico.off-road.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&amp;Board=offroadjeepshort&amp;N umber=691421&amp;page=&amp;view=&amp;sb=&amp;o=&am p;vc=1>http://tellico.off-road.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&amp;Board=offroadjeepshort&amp;N umber=691421&amp;page=&amp;view=&amp;sb=&amp;o=&am p;vc=1</a>

Re: SOA vs. SUA

With 7inch spring pads sprung over I don't have much axle wrap. It isn't bad enough to make a traction bar.

Re: SOA vs. SUA

I've made the move to SOA and the results are adequate... to say the least. Ladder style traction bar is the needed fix, although mine works fine as a temporary measure with an extra full length leaf added. There is something to be said about being able to crawl over Yugo sized boulders without any scraping...

Re: SOA vs. SUA

There are 2 types of SOA suspensions, those that have a well designed anti wrap bar, and those that need a well designed wrap bar.
You can use longer spring perches,(I have, them on mine), you can use helper springs,(I have experimented with dozens of combos), you can try waving a magic chicken over your head in a clockwise circle while dancing the anti wrap chat on one foot,...but an SOA suspension needs an anti wrap bar,...PERIOD!!!
Once you install one, you will be amazed at how much better your traction is, and you will notice it even on the street as a drastic improvement.
Dont kid yourself that your suspension is working, just because you havent destroyed your springs in a catastrophic S wrap failure.
Its well worth the Saturday it takes to build one and the $75 in steel, bolts and bushings.
