need 304 heads

Found a small crack in the water jacket of my passenger side head. Anyone has a spare set of 304 heads they want to part with, or know if ford 302 heads will work?

Dave, those heads you gave me will cost more to clean up than buying another set will cost so, It's back to the search.

Re: need 304 heads

AMC engines are AMC not ford, not chevy, not dodge, not IH, not nissan, ...

AMC used other companies components but the engines are all theirs.

I do have a spare 304 but I do not want to part it out and it's a long way to come to central arkansas to pick it up.

Re: need 304 heads

I have a set-they are in pieces if that matters to you. They need to be rebuilt, probably like yours do now. Send me a private message on what you would give for them. I am in Iowa for shipping purposes.

Re: need 304 heads

I thought about that, but I thought it was 304 heads on a 360 not 360 on 304. Which way is it?

It is the way elusive indicated it is...that's a great topic for search if you have any questions on swapping in a set of 360 heads.

Re: need 304 heads

From what I understand the block will need some machining for clearance of the valves. Unfortunately that would mean being down again and a higher cost. this is my DD and weekend warrior, and I can't afford to buy heads and have the block worked. Sounds great, just not feasible right now.

Re: need 304 heads

heres detailed swap directions:
1. throw out your worthless 304 heads.
2. buy new head gaskets
3. bolt on 360 heads
4. enjoy your new performance.
thats it.. they BOLT RIGHT ON... no machining.. no clearance issues..
think about this.. if you machine the block.. you'll move the valves CLOSER to the pistons.. i shaved the ehads a bit for higher compression, and i still didnt have any clearance problems. that engine is still running VERY strong even though it has been in 3 different jeeps now.. I have also done this swap on a few other 304's.. never had any problems....really helps t breathe with a 4bbl intake and a better cam...like a .262 cam... gets the little 304 to crank out some torque!

Re: need 304 heads

OK ...
So what's the deal with the old late 1970's heads with the rocker studs and dog leg ports?
I've got a rusty old set of these and was told they are desirable.
Anyone know about them?

Re: need 304 heads

Doglegs are supposed to flow better the little knobber thing has more area, rocker studs for obvious reason-can use better rocker arms. The rust, however, is the valuable part. All late 70's Jeeps have a tremendous amount of rust on them. It is this rust that is hard to match with any other type of vehicle rust. It is earned by being too cheap to buy new vehicles. JEEP RUST IS SUPREME TO ALL OTHERS!! It is a variable in the phrase "It's a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand."
