Ford 9\" swap
Wondering if anyone has swapped a Ford 9" in the rear of a jeep? If so was there any problems with the swap, and is it worth it. I have a 9" out of an early Bronco. Dont remember the exact year. I would be putting it in a 85 CJ-7. The difference in width was like 2 inchs. That dosent bother me at all. I also know that I would have to weld in new perches and all that stuff. Thanks for any help

Re: Ford 9\" swap
I put a 9" from a '74 Bronco in my '77 CJ7. It was pretty straight forward, I welded new perches on, as it worked out they needed to be positioned right under the axle from the Bronco perches. The 9" is shorter than the AMC 20, so your driveshaft will need to be lengthened.

Re: Ford 9\" swap
You will also get an increase in drive shaft angle after installing the 9". The pinion is lower than the old rear end and may require a CV shaft to eliminate vibration. On the + side your emergency brake cable will work with the ford drum brakes!!

Re: Ford 9\" swap
I have a eb 9in and it is a really easy swap. The spring perches are in the same spot just on top of the old ones(center to center is 36 inches). If your running a soa just bolt it in. You will need different spring plates since the axle tubs are bigger. Also on my 80 not sure about the 85's the shocks mount on the spring plate so i had to do something about that. My driveshaft grew 2 inches with the 9in. I am not running a CV joint and I have no vib problems. I also run a set of explorer disk brakes on the 9in. That was a very easy and well worth swap. Good luck
