Re: EBAY, bulk sale of surplus 8.8 axles

Seems a little bit expensive. $600 for a rear. When I picked up the 8.8 that I put in my wrangler, I picked up 2 extras(all $250 a peice) just to have for future friends or customers who wanted to upgrade. My 8.8, with new seals/brakes(including wheel cylinder, drums and all new hardware)/and a loc-right barely cost me $600.

Speed Buggy:

I am not to familiar, I believe I read they are comparable to a 44, slightly better in some aspects.

They seem like a pretty good deal if they come with your ratio. You could spend couple of hundred just for the disk upgrade.

those axles are pretty good units except for the c-clip.

Re: EBAY, bulk sale of surplus 8.8 axles

do they come in 3.54 gear ratio?

I think I have heard that they are not a bolt up swap. What is involved in swapping one to the rear?

Thanks
Tony

Re: EBAY, bulk sale of surplus 8.8 axles

okay you all got me thinking about replacing the AMC 20 in my CJ. And I got a few more questions.

-how wide are these axles?
-What gear ratios do they come in?
-What lug patterns are they?
-what year exploders did they come on?
-WHat all is involved in the install?

Re: EBAY, bulk sale of surplus 8.8 axles

-how wide are these axles? 1.5" narrower than wrangler
-What gear ratios do they come in? 3.73 & 4.10 I think
-What lug patterns are they? 5x4-1/2
-what year exploders did they come on?
-WHat all is involved in the install? Weld on new spring perches and for a CJ, use adapters to get to 5x5-1/2 pattern or have them redrilled or get new wheels.

The C-clip isnt a problem, the disk brake caliper will hold the axle in case of a c-clip failure.

Re: EBAY, bulk sale of surplus 8.8 axles

not a problem? maybe enough to limp you back to pavement, that is if it has a locker. if it isnt locked up, you are going front wheel drive only back to camp. if this is on a street/trail vehicle then that may pose more of a problem. i am not one to drive home with a busted c-clip and a brake caliper holding things together.
thats just me though.

Re: EBAY, bulk sale of surplus 8.8 axles

Have you ever even seen a C Clip from an 8.8?
There is no way in hell that a C clip is gonna break, and I have never ever heard of one breaking. If on the other hand the axle shaft lets go, the you will still be able to limp off the trail with the calipers holding the shaft in.
Everyone has heard of the horror stories of Chevy 10 bolt C clips letting go, so they assume that the 8.8 is the same design and has the same frailities, it isnt the case.
The C clip is not an issue. Period.....
And the strength of an 8.8 over a D44 makes it well worth the consideration as a very desireable rear axle swap. Do the homework, look at the math, and the strengths of the 8.8 shine through. Now if you wanna listen to the off road rags, then you will not like what you hear, as they have no major manufacturers selling high dollar swag for them, so they talk them down, and down play thier strengths, but they love to scream "C CLIP" like its a weakness.
