How Hot Should New Gears Get?

I just finished installing 4.56 gears a detroit in my AMC 20. Wasn't too bad a job thanks to all the help I found in this site.

Pinion Depth is good. Pinion Preload is about 20 in-lbs. I guess the carrier preload is good, cause it went in but was a pretty snug fit. I've got a good pattern on both sides of the ring gear. My backlash is a little tight (.005") but my dial indicator really sucks and it may be a little more. Gears are quiet based on the two short trips I've taken so far during break-in.

My question is, how hot should the rear get? I can still touch it, but it is pretty warm. I've been told it will get hot until the gears break in. Is this true?

Thanks

Re: How Hot Should New Gears Get?

You should be alright, I just did 3 in as many weeks and the 1st one would really get hot but its okay now, just keep an eye on it, later.
