whjich way does the spindle seal go?

It's been awhile since I tore down this front end and now I don't remember
which way the seals go! It has three pieces...one goes on the large portion
of the axle shaft....the next one is a hard material and has a flat side with
a bevel on the other...and the last one is small with a flat side and v shape
on the other-it's made of rubber. I wish I had a digital camera, but I'm sure
you'll know what I'm talking about.

oh it's dana 44 but the 30 is the same.

Thanks for the diagram, but those seals have two different sides that the
picture doesn't show. I was wondering which direction they faced...

Re: whjich way does the spindle seal go?

My 1980 Jeep Service Manual says this:

(5) Install bronze washer with chamfered side towards axle shaft seal. (I think most replacement washers now days are plastic)
(6) Install replacement axle shaft seal with lip facing spindle. (the lip is the thinner more flexable part of this larger seal)
(7) Pack wheel bearing lubricant around thrust face of shaft seal and fill seal area of spindle with wheel bearing lubricant also
The smaller seal goes in after you have installed the needle roller bearing in the spindle and the lip faces outwards.

Shaft seal, notsure?

Bevel towards diff.

V-shape away from diff.

I just did this two nights ago. Luckily I left the seals on the spindle so I didn't have to remember. It has been several months since the tear down. Hope this helps.

Later,
