I have seen the crack!! Dana 44 update....

I spent another hour grinding the welds on the knuckles, and I have seen the crack! I ran
out of time to actually get the knuckle off but I should have it off shortly! I had to grind into
the knuckle in order to get a seam to show.

When you get ready to put them back on here's a little trick for you. Stick the knuckles in the oven at 350* for about 45 minutes. Have everything ready to put them on as soon as you take them out. They'll go on much easier than trying to beat them back on. Just be ready to move fast and have your angle finder handy for setting the caster.

yeah thos are a pita. especially the first time. those welds have really good penetration so as you figured out you have to dig in alittle with the grinder.

Re: I have seen the crack!! Dana 44 update....

when i put the knuckles back on, you'll find that its very difficult to get the knuckles back on.. heres what i do.
1. lay a chunk of 2x4 on top of a chunk of 4x4 on a concrete surface
2. lay the "C" open face down on the wood(A$$ up)
3. pick up the axle housing and drop into the hole in the "C"
this sounds really hard, but i put my d-60 back together like this and it worked great. It's very very difficult to hammer the knuckles back on without getting the started somehow first.
also.. make sure you dont grind the axle tube at all.. its supposed to be a press-fit and thats what keeps the axle "square"

When we do them at work we just heat the knuckle up with a torch and slide it on. You have about 10 seconds to set the caster easily then it takes a hammer to help it move.
