T-5 mustang / jeep same?

My T-150 in my Cj-5 is slowly leaving me. I feel the $$ for the repairs could be better spent on a slight upgrade to the T-5. From some people Ive heard the T-5 from the Mustangs is a bolt on, and from others, ive heard theyre different... i wanna know which is right. i can find T-5s from stangs left and right, whilef inding one from a Cj is damn near impossible.

PS will a T-5 fit under a CJ-5?

Re: T-5 mustang / jeep same?

While I am not sure what is different, the T-5 from a Mustang will not bolt to a Jeep bellhousing. Why not look for a T176 from a 80-86 CJ? It's a better tranny than either the T5 or the T150. You'd need the bellhousing from the later Jeep to make this swap work. I paid $400 for a freshly rebuilt T176, bellhousings shoud run about $100 or less.

The problem with replacing it with another Jeep transmission is FINDING that transmission. Are there any decent, easy to find trannys that wont eat my wallet?

Re: T-5 mustang / jeep same?

The gearing in the Mustang T5 is higher. 1st, 2nd, I believe. Advanced Adapters did offer Jeep T5s ready to go, but I'm not sure if they still do since they began carrying the NV3550. I'd look at the T176 as said or a Jeep T18 (4.0 1st), if you don't need a granny 1st gear.

Re: T-5 mustang / jeep same?

The tailhousings are COMPLETELY different. And even if you could somehow get a Jeep T-5 tailhousing on a Mustang T-5, the car model is geared alot higher than the jeep one..
Here's a Mustang T-5...

And the Jeep model..

Re: T-5 mustang / jeep same?

Incidentally, should you choose to replace the T150, I've got one at home that is in good shape--came out of a 77 CJ, has 60K on it. Synchros, etc. are all in good shape, shifts well, and is COMPLETE.
