401 question

Hello all,
I am looking at a 76 jeep cj that has a 401 4 spd. Can this be original? Also what would the motor be worth with 80,000 in running condition? Any help would be great....Tom

Re: 401 question

Never factory offered 401 in CJs that Ive heard of, also 80K is pushing it for an MAC oil system, and the 401 blocks are prone to over heat unless the cooling system is "perfect" at bores over stock.

if its cheap and setup like you want, it might bea a bargain.

then again it may be an overpriced nightmare

Re: 401 question

I'd double check the casting to insure it IS a 401 before doing anything else (as opposed to a 304 someone is trying to pawn off as a 401).

Re: 401 question

I believe you can check the passenger side of the block sorta below and behind the engine mount and the engine disp is cast into the block in large numbers. Have you driven this jeep? 401's are kinda valuable you might be able to get a few hundred for it if you don't like it.

Re: 401 question

The displacement is cast in both sides of the block if I remember right.

Re: 401 question

Thank you all I will check the castings to see If it's for real. He is asking $500.00 for it so even if it turnes out to be a 304 it's probably worth it.....Tom
