Re: 88 wrangler wont pass nj emissions HELP

I had the same problem here in WA. took me 5 times to get it to pass. After it didn't pass the first time, I took out the air cleaner and messed with the carb jets until it passed. kind of a trial and error type of thing. Hope that helps.

Re: 88 wrangler wont pass nj emissions HELP

This is somewhat irrelavent, but I had a Datsun 280z that wouldn't pass because of high CO. It was an old school form of MPI. It had one of those crappy airflow meters on it. A guy at a Datsun shop adjusted that sucker until it ran like crap. But it passed with flying colors. So don't think that just cause your YJ is running great that it'll pass. I say mess with that carb and try and get it to run well enough to drive there.

Re: 88 wrangler wont pass nj emissions HELP

I am amazed at the standards some states have for emissions.. Here (Ontario Canada) you only have to take a test every 2 years until your vehicle is 20 yrs old.. After that it is exempt.. And even if you do fail, they give you a list of stuff to do to help it pass.. You only actually have to spend up to $200.. You then go for one more test, and if you fail again, they give you a 'conditional'.. This makes it good for 2 more years.. You can only have one conditional though, after that it has to pass emissions. That is untill it is 20 years old.. This is what will probobly happen with my jeep, but it turns 20 yrs old next year...

NJ inspection sucks. There is just no way around it. I dont even bother with the public inspection places anymore. I go right to a private place pay them the 75 to 100 bucks and let them inspect it. They will adjust the carb till it does pass. Also if you ask them kindly they will even put the carb back to where it was so it does run right again when you leave.

I second that, I had an 81 Z28(when I lived in NJ) with a Holley 750, guy at the inspection (private shop) told me. "It was fun getting it to pass...."
take that for what it's worth.
